John Finnegan has been Harrogate’s President for the past 5 years and everbody at the Club is desperately sad to hear about his untimely death at the age of just 71.
After retiring as a talented 2nd row forward, John became a diligent behind the scenes worker for the Club but really came into his own when he took over as President in 2012. He was enormously conscientious in all his Presidential duties and was extremely generous to the Club, both materially and with the time he devoted to us. His sound business judgement proved to be a great benefit in Club affairs and his wise counsel was also much appreciated at NCA Meetings.
Most people, particularly visitors to the Club, will remember him particularly for his warm personality and the highly developed social skills with which he greeted our guests. His pre match speeches were warm and wittily welcoming while always showing a great insight into the game and the people involved in it.
I, along with countless others, will remember John as a great friend whose company we’re all going to miss. This, of course, pales into nothingness compared to what Jo and the rest of his family are going through. Jo and John were a very close couple whose love for each other was clearly shown during the all too short period where she nursed him at home during his final illness. Our hearts go out to this lovely family and to John’s memory.
The funeral details have yet to be finalised but the service will be at Christ Church, Harrogate with the wake at Harrogate Rugby Club.
John’s Funeral Service will be held at Christ Church, Harrogate HG1 4SW at 1.30 pm on Friday 23rd June 17.
The wake will be at Harrogate Rugby Club.
