Since Doc Doherty became Harrogate’s Director of Rugby, one of his aims has been to develop rugby in the local schools and colleges. This led to him taking on the rugby coaching at the Army Foundation College which has developed hugely under his tutelage. Rugby’s core values are very similar to the military ones and this has led to a close bond being developed between our Club and the Army Foundation College
About the same time that this development was starting, Harrogate suffered the tragic loss of our much loved and still much lamented President, John Finnegan. Our Club Presidents normally have a 2 years tenure of office but, having taken office in 2012, John developed the role hugely and was persuaded to carry on longer. He was still our President when he died in 2017 so he gave us almost the last 5 years of his life.
John involved himself in every facet of Club activity but, of course, the playing of rugby took absolute precedence. He actively supported all levels of Club rugby----senior rugby, second and third team rugby, Colts, Junior and Ladies. He would have been delighted to see our recent playing successes and would have been absolutely thrilled with this season’s Colts League triumph.
Since John’s death, Jo, his wife, has flung herself heart and soul into trying to carry on what John did for us. The first John Finnegan Memorial match took place last year at the AFC and Jo was on hand to present the trophy. She’s now a Club Committee Member and she’ll be here on Saturday to enjoy the game and again present the trophy to the winning captain in memory of John, our revered President and her much loved husband.
