Harrogate travelled to Alwoodley on Sunday morning to take on Leo’s and their referee.

The teams took to the field on a damp, miserable morning both sides observed a minutes silence to commemorate Remembrance Day.
Harrogate kicked off and Leo’s handling errors soon had them pinned back on their own line and clearing to touch. Harrogate won the lineout and passed along the backs the ball ending up in the hands of winger and debutant Robbie Jenkins who was stopped just short of the line by a high tackle. From the resulting penalty Harrogate spun the ball along the backs to opposite winger George Diggle who making his first appearance of the season scored in the corner. The conversion was missed and Harrogate led 5-0.
Leo’s then came back at Harrogate gaining an unexplained penalty on Gates twenty two. Gate were then sent back a further ten metres onto their try line for questioning the decision. A series of scrums and mauls then pursued before a Leo’s forward crashed over to score from close range. The conversion was kicked and Leo’s led 7-5.
Harrogate again came back on the offensive. A poor Leo’s clearance kick was fielded by Cullon Troy who linked well with fly half Harry Fewkes a slick pass to centre Dom Marsh who made ground, Fewkes looped his centre to create the extra man and put Diggle in space for his second try of the match. The extras were missed 7-10 Harrogate.
Leo’s came back again from a scrum the ball went along the backs, Harrogate player Elliot Bloodworth, lent to Leo’s for the game, made a strong break, two mauls followed short of the Harrogate line before a Leo’s forward went over from close range. The conversion was missed 12-10 Leo’s.
From the kick off Leo’s knocked on, Harrogate won the scrum and centre Dom Marsh burst through the Leo’s backs to score. The extra’s were missed again 12-15 Harrogate.
Leo’s came back again, their blatant knock on was ignored and a couple of phases later their centre outstripped the Gate defence to score, the conversion was missed.
Half time came and Leo’s led 17-15.
The second half started with Leo’s and ref continuing to pin Harrogate deep in their own territory. The forwards defended strongly with Cullon Troy, Josh Willson and Harry Holroyd leading the way. Harrogate eventually cleared their lines.
The Harrogate forwards turned over the ball from a Leo’s ruck 40 metres out, the ball eventually ending up with Luke Gair who outpaced the defence to score, the conversion was missed but Harrogate had the lead 20-17.
This spurred on Harrogate not wanting to be out done by Leo’s or the referee.
Harrogate won a scrum the ball was spun out to Lozz Hargreaves who playing in the centre made a great break and off load to George Diggle creating the champagne moment, Diggle’s hatrick and final score of the match, Leo’s 17 Harrogate 25.
Congratulations to the lads who in the face of adversity put in a spirited performance and managed to keep their cool and gain a deserved victory. Well played to the Leo’s team who fought hard to the end.
