A tale of two very different styles.

A tale of two very different styles.

An intriguing battle between two very different sides a Harrogate side with seven of the pack under 20 years of age versus a very experienced side.

It was to battle of styles, Gate always looking to play with width and pace against a Hegians side playing a very physical and direct game.

Early on the home side showed their intent with a series of drives culminating in the forwards rumbling over for a well worked score that announced emphatically that it was game on.

After a few early missed tackles the boys started to get into the game and after a sublime line taken by Tim Tombling putting Greg Aspin in for a super try out wide, the extras added emphatically by Tim 5 v 7

The next score was a solo effort by Bekky whose speed was too much for the covering Hegians defence to go in under the posts and with a drop goal added the extras 5 v 14.

Back came Hegians again their canny forwards rumbling on and really being effective in and around the breakdown and in a carbon copy of their first try went over again 10 v 14.

Following some good ball carrying with Dave Hamblin & Sam Beagrie to the fore created space and as the ball went out Sam Thomas was on hand to smash through the defence and score out wide 10 v 19

The next try was the champagne moment with Bryn Kitching leaping high & taking a kick only to find he had a clear run to the line and sprinted the 25m to the line much to the delight of team & spectators 26 v 10.

Dickie Davies was next onto the score sheet with a well worked backs moved initiated by Phil W & Tim T carving through the defence and creating the space for Dickie to side step the full back and go over 31 v 10.

Hegians came back again with more effective direct and well supporting play, aided by a few tackles a bit too high enabling the momentum to be maintained and in quick succession two tries narrowing the gap to 31 v 24 but it was to be the last hurrah as they tired and Gate started to cut loose.

Bekky scored another solo effort and added the extras 38 v 24 and when a sweeping move initiated by a strong run by Beags and swift hands by Lovers put Will Clough in space who straightened his line to draw the two covering players and pass gave Danny Cooke a try against his old team 43 v 24

A good lesson for a young team in managing to overcome a direct and physical side, Bryn, Dave, Damo & the 2 Sams all carried strongly, Rory, Ethan & Peter all put in a strong shift as did Will whan he came on for a taste of life in the pack.

The backs always looked dangerous, Phil was always looking to go quick, Tim’s distribution was good and Dickie & Greg made good yards while the back three Bekky, Danny, Ben & Oli were a constant threat.
