15 committed players traveled to Castleford on a day when 50mph winds made playing very difficult. Several cry offs left the squad very depleted and starting with Bekky & Ben Pye starting as flankers as opposed to on the wings !!
Cass are always a hard bunch and have a no nonsense approach with a vociferous partisan crowd always baying for blood - Big Dave gave an impassioned pre game speech about the core values and family ethos within the club.
From the off the 3's stunned Cass with ferocious tackling, smashing them back and clearing out with real intent creating quick ball and running with power and pace creating enough space for Danny Cooke to outpace the defense on the outside to score out wide 0 v 5.
Cass started to get some ball but too often tried to kick which into the wind was almost impossible, when they did break out they were met with resolute defense and often dangerous moves ended with a Gate turnover to relieve the pressure.
Harry Barnard then scored a fine individual try going in under the posts after beating six defenders, Dickies conversion was cruelly caught by the wicked cross wind and turned at right angles but a lead of 0 v 10.
The rest of the half saw Gate go close several times to scoring a third but Cass defended strongly, they were obviously a bit rattled and some niggle started to appear, Captain Greg was binned along with a Cass forward after a disagreement.
10 v 0 at half time with a 40 mins into a gale was going to be demanding but Gate set about it in resolute fashion repelling Cass attacks time and again in the first 10 mins of the half until a serious looking neck injury after a collapsed scrum saw Josh Smith needing the attention of new Physio Lewis who was superb. While waiting for the ambulance the game moved to pitch one to continue.
Playing into the wind the 3's fought tooth and nail for everything being only down to 14 men - Bekky then extended the lead with a well taken try out wide for 15 v 0.
Cass finally got on the board with 12 mins left after a couple of penalties saw them use the wind to force play deep into Gate territory and with 3 mins to go a second well worked try brought them within a point but the passion desire and work rate of the 3's saw them hold out for a deserved victory at what is always a difficult venue.
Thanks to the Cass Manager Dave and the spectators who helped look after Josh who thankfully had no break, just tissue damage.
Most of all thanks to the players for filling the shirt with such pride and passion
