Greg (Irish) Townend

Greg (Irish) Townend

Michael Cowling12 May - 13:11

Well known former HRUFC Player from 70's & 80's

Harrogate RUFC is sad to share the news that former player and junior parent Greg (Irish) Townend passed away at St Michael’s Hospice Harrogate yesterday after fighting
stage IV bowel cancer for nearly 5 years.

Greg Irish played for the first team in the 70’s and 80’s before
moving to America. He changed his surname to Townend in honour of his
beloved grandfather and then returned to the UK in 2012 with his wife
Jeanne and sons Grayson, Paul and Collin. Grayson (23) and Paul (21)
both played rugby at Harrogate starting in 2012. He is also survived
by his sister Denise (Irish) Jagger who also grew up in Harrogate and now lives in York.

Greg had requested no funeral and instead his family will hold a garden party for friends 7 June. In lieu of flowers people may wish to donate to St Michael’s Hospice Harrogate or Cancer Research UK.

Thanks to Brian Forshaw for compiling the PDF attached with Greg's playing history at HRUFC
