Match Report: Harrogate 36 – 44 Heath
Harrogate and Heath delivered a breathless, high-scoring encounter that swung dramatically across 80 minutes before Heath emerged 44–36 winners. The match card shows a contest packed with momentum shifts, clinical finishing, and a dominant kicking display from Heath’s fly half Johnson, whose boot ultimately proved decisive.
First Half: Harrogate Start Fast
Harrogate were explosive out of the blocks. Within five minutes, winger Miller (14) opened the scoring with a try to make it 5–0.
Just a minute later, Dobson (13) added the conversion for 7–0.
Heath responded at 12 minutes through Cole (15), narrowing the score to 7–5, with Johnson (10) levelling the match at 7–7 from the tee.
Harrogate surged again as hooker Head (2) crossed on 23 minutes for 12–7.
Dobson’s missed conversion kept the lead at five.
Before the break, Harrogate stretched the margin when Hill (8) powered over at 28 minutes (17–7), followed by another missed conversion.
The final act of the half came at 34 minutes as Miller grabbed his second try, pushing the hosts out to 22–7, although again the conversion was missed.
At 38 minutes, Cox (9) sparked Heath’s revival with a try (22–12) and Johnson’s conversion cut the gap to 22–14
Harrogate were still in control at this stage, but the missed kicks were to prove costly.
Second Half: Heath’s Comeback Begins
The momentum turned sharply after the break.
The first 20 minutes of the half were dominated by CLOUGH (8), who scored tries at 43, 46, and 59 minutes, a remarkable hat trick that transformed the game. With Johnson converting all three, Heath suddenly led 22–35.
Harrogate Fight Back
Harrogate refused to fold.
At 65 minutes, the half-time replacement Percival (16) crossing the line (27–35), and Mallinson (10) added the conversion to bring Harrogate back within six at 29–35.
This resurgence came shortly after a string of tactical substitutions at 60 and 68 minutes.
Johnson Seals It for Heath
With the game in the balance, Heath’s fly half Johnson (10) took control.
He struck:
• a penalty at 71 minutes (29–38)
• a drop goal at 76 minutes (29–41)
• another penalty at 77 minutes (29–44)
This nine-point burst effectively put the match beyond Harrogate.
Late Consolation for Harrogate

Summary
Harrogate’s blistering start rocked the league leaders but their six try haul were undone by inconsistent goal kicking and a second half surge from Heath. Johnson’s composed kicking performance and Clough’s devastating trio of tries powered Heath to a comeback victory in what was an entertaining, high-scoring affair. Without doubt, the game of the season (so far) for both teams, regardless of the result.
The game was well fought between two strong sides. We dominated the first half but Heath took control in the second.
Jake Brady, Harrogate Director of Rugby said:
We bagged the 4 try bonus point inside 40 minutes and showed the potential of the group. We had dominance in the lineout and maul while dictating where the game was played. We went through the phases in attack and kept possession for long periods.
Once in that strong position, we needed to force Heath to chase the game. Unfortunately, we were ill-disciplined, and this gave the opposition ample opportunity to get back into the game, which they took. We were not able to reverse this momentum shift right until the final 10 minutes, where we came close to taking a second bonus point.
Congratulations to Heath, who are now unbeaten in all 17 league games. An impressive achievement.
