Harrogate put up a much improved performance against the league leaders Hull, most of whose players are semi-professional. In the first half, Hull took the lead with a try from strong running Keane Naylor. Hull then knocked on in midfield and with Harrogate looking to score with a clear overlap, the referee called them back for a scrum to Harrogate, which took away a clear advantage. Harrogate competed well and earned a penalty in front of the posts which Macnab converted to make the score 3-5. A second try for Hull by Dean made it 3-10. Harrogate defended well for the remainder of the half.

Harrogate continued to compete well, but the penalty count enabled Hull to keep the pressure in the Harrogate half. Johnson scored Hull’s third try, Naylor added a fourth and then Harrogate replied with a great try showing fine footballing skills and Macnab winning the race to touch down. A final try for Hull from Dean made the score 10-27 which didn’t reflect the improved performance of the young Harrogate team, for whom Callum Hodgson made his debut in the final minute.

The referee was Ben Davis.
