Pocklington vs Harrogate

matthew grant29 Nov 2009 - 18:04

Despite recent bad weather, playing conditions at Pocklington were excellent which boded well for a competitive match.

Early on Harrogate were penalised a number of times for infringements at the breakdown. Pocklington were rewarded with the first scoring chance after two minutes with a penalty. Fortunately for the visitors the kick was pushed wide.

Harrogate's pack were proving dominant at the set piece but this was well balanced by fine rucking from Pocklington who were well organised and never over committed.

On 14 minutes a firm tackle by Harrogate's Ing Simmons saw the ball popped up to Papworth whose acceleration saw him clear of the Pocklington defence to run 50m and score.

Stanyard's conversion attempt dropped short of the target.

Pocklington continued to ruck and maul well but were unable to use the ball effectively in the backs despite gaining good attacking positions.

Ten minutes later, Hopper fro Harrogate broke from deep in his own territory and ran a superb line to cut through the Pocklington defence before completing a fine long pass out to Thompson who fed Ing-Simmons on the wing whose pace saw him through to score. 10 – 0 with a candidate for try of the season!

Pocklington were quick to strike back and within five minutes had reduced the deficit by five points.

With five minutes of the half to go Harrogate were reduced to 14 players for a Sin Bin offence. Despite the numerical advantage Pocklington were unable to take advantage before half time.

Harrogate made a couple of substitutions at half time and as a result of injuries to Pocklington's front row the scrum became uncontested.

Despite the loss of a distinct advantage Harrogate continued to press and ten minutes into the half Callum Grant scored his debut try a strong, attacking run for the line. Stanyard now found his range to convert,
17 – 5.

Pocklington were then gifted a try by some weak tackling from Harrogate which saw Pocklington's star half back beat a numerous tackles to score a fine individual try. With the conversion Pocklington were well in touch at 17 – 12.

By continuing to defend well and attack through the centres Harrogate continued to press for further points despite some poor rucking, which saw rather too many turn-overs for the spectators' liking.

However, some eventual secure ball saw Thompson released on the wing to extend the lead to 22 – 12. With Stanyard slotting over the conversion Harrogate were able to close out the match at 24 – 12.
