The Under 16’s travelled to Yarnbury in Yorkshire Cup Round 2. Yarnbury were unbeaten this season which included a couple of impressive victories against strong sides.
The match kicked off with the bright sun on Harrogate’s backs. Harrogate started well regaining the ball from the kick off and keeping possession well for most of the first fifteen minutes. Pressure eventually told and winger Leon Watson beat a couple of defenders to score an impressive try in the corner. The conversion was missed 5-0 Harrogate.
Yarnbury then stormed back into the game, intelligent high kicking from their fly half into the sun resulted in Harrogate handling errors and a long period of defence. Yarnbury battered at the Harrogate line, the pressure resulting in many penalties awarded to Yarnbury. Surprisingly they declined to kick at goal a few times opting to tap and go. Harrogate’s defence was superb and kept the constant attacks out with Yarnbury eventually kicking at goal from another offside penalty. The kick was good reducing Harrogate’s lead to 5-3 which remained the score at half time.
Harrogate started the second half well and the pressure paid dividends. A penalty against Yarnbury was converted by Callum Beasley 8-3 Harrogate. Harrogate now began to take control of territory, Scott Irvine crashed over the Yarnbury line for the next score. Conversion missed 13-3.
Harrogate now had a little breathing space but continued to attack. Scott Irvine was tackled just short of Yarnbury’s line after a superb 40 metre run. Luke Gair was next to try his luck finishing a move in the corner only to be unluckily adjudged held up.
Yarnbury then had a player sin binned with fifteen minutes left and Harrogate continued to attack. From an attacking scrum 15 metres out Harrogate scrum half Harry Fewkes passed inside to No8 Cullon Troy who took out his man and passed back to Fewkes who danced over the Yarnbury line for the final score of the match Yarnbury 3 Harrogate 18.
Congratulations to both squads who produced a highly competitive, skilful and entertaining match.
Well played to the Harrogate lads who all put in hard shift, worked tremendously hard for each other and got the result they deserved.
